Proficiency Tests

Students taking the Writing section of the Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency Test are required to write two essays in two and one half hours.  The two essays should be approximately five paragraphs in length. The three possible types of essays used on the test are expository, descriptive, and narrative.  An expository essay requires the student to fully explain a topic in a logical, well-structured manner. A descriptive essay requires the student to describe a topic in great detail using creativity and imagery.  A narrative essay requires the student to tell a clearly-focused, realistic story in chronological  order.
